I seem to have spent a lot time at this conference talking to people about the 'things I am going to take back to my developer colleagues' for discussion, so to start the ball rolling and find out what others might be looking to take further I thought I'd start a discussion here: SWORDv2 solution for Norwegian master's thesis submission portal in UGD1 which demonstrated an innovative use of StudentWeb to DSpace deposit of theses from initial draf... Hardy Pottinger posted A MOspace Manifesto

I promised this link during our session (Putting a face to the service: the people behind making the local global), so, here it is. Thanks for such an enjoyable conference, and thank you to everyone who danced, both at our session, as well as the céilidh. You don't know home much both events meant to me. And I'd also like to apologize to anyone whom I made homesick... if it helps, I am, too, and am very much looking forward to the journey home, t... [read more]

Hardy Pottinger: I should not re-read postings after they are done, but I apparently made a very telling typo above, the first occurrence of "home" should read "how".
Nicola Osborne: Thank you for sharing that link. I'm really glad to hear you enjoyed the event and the dancing! :)

Robin Taylor posted Unofficial Food Guide

Tricky this one. Scotland has some of the best produce and worst food in the world. There is nothing we won't deep fry. There are good scottish restaurants but they tend to be top end and not suitable for expense budgets. Better to steer towards international cuisine... For those of you who have arrived early for the workshops, you may have noticed the rain this morning! There are buses between Pollock Halls and the Appleton Tower venue, however you'll have to walk for 5 minutes at each end, so you may decide to walk the whole way. There is an online journey planner at http://www.lothianbuses.com/ and you can enter Pollock Halls in the 'From' box, and Appleton Tower in the 'To' box. The cost of a one way fare is... Hardy Pottinger posted running in Edinburgh?

So, I've asked around a bit, and it seems that Holyrood is a gorgeous, though a tad hilly, place to run, but I'm up for it. I'm training for a half marathon in September, so I can't really take a week off. I'm at a point where I need to run between 4 and 5 miles. My pace ranges from a mostly leisurely 18 minutes/mile to a breathless 15 minutes/mile, so it's highly likely you'll be able to keep up with me. I'm just barely a runner. Anyhow, if you'... Claire Knowles: Once around the Meadows is approx 1 1/2 miles. Though you can may the loop further if you up to Bruntsfield Links, but I avoid that as it's uphill.
Theo Andrew: The route round Holyrood park is about 3 miles long - its all uphill one way but downhill for the rest. Its right next door to Pollock Halls so would be perfect location wise for you.
Michael Bond: I'm getting ready for a 1/2 marathon in November. I plan on running a different route through the area every morning before the conference starts. Maybe we can meet up one morning.

I have had a paper accepted on "Can LinkedIn and Academia.edu Enhance Access to Open Repositories?". The paper is available at http://opus.bath.ac.uk/30227/ and a blog post about this is at http://ukwebfocus.wordpress.com/2012/07/03/paper-accepted-for-or12/ Also note that embedded Slideshare contains a 4 minute summary of the paper. It strikes me as a bit of a no-brainer that repository managers, research support staff, etc, who wish to maximise ... [read more]

Steph Taylor posted Repo Knitting Meetup

After a Twitter discussion, there seems a lot of interest in having a meetup for all the knitters who will be at the conference :) Ideas so far are a lunchtime or evening, maybe in a pub or cafe. Have you any suggestions for location? Would it help to have a poll to decide the best day? Steph

Jane H Smith: Got some Nahlbound (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N%C3%A5lebinding) socks and a knitted blanket on the go - may start a hat for the conference
Jane H Smith: Bean Scene 9http://www.beanscene.co.uk/) on Nicholson St and a second suggestion of Kilimanjaro, have been received by an attendee not on here.
Jane H Smith: And a suggested charity pattern if we so wish - knitting for the Fish n Chip Babies (http://scottishcountryhouse.wordpress.com/2011/11/12/fish-and-chip-babies-knitting-pattern/)

Nicola Osborne posted Problems with Crowdvine RSS Feeds

Several people have reported that there is a problem with RSS Feeds on the OR2012 Crowdvine pages. We have looked into the issue and, as we are unable to resolve it directly, it has now been reported to Crowdvine. Whilst the RSS feeds are broken we would suggest starting discussions around any particular link you want to share - you should not only then see your post appearing on the front page here but you will also have an extra opportunity for... Robin Taylor posted Unofficial Pub Guide

Hi all, here are a few tips on local pubs... The Pear Tree (http://www.pear-tree-house.co.uk/) - right next to the conference venue with a beer garden if it ever stops raining. Sandy Bells (http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/edinburgh/pubguide/sandybells.html) - full of old men and folk musicians, a personal favourite. The Auld Hoose (http://www.theauldhoose.co.uk/) - looks old school but favoured by grungy types. Expect to find some of the So... [read more]

Jane H Smith: Most of my recommendations would be 10 years out of date! so I've omitted them, in case the places no longer exist!
